Is Your Roof Ventilation Working Against You?

Roof ventilation problems can go unnoticed depending on how often you have a roofer inspect it. You may not know you have this problem until your ceiling shows stains near exterior walls or corners. It can also pose a health risk by causing mold growth. Poor roof ventilation can shave years off your roof. Here is how.

Exterior Warning Signs

Your home will show warning signs that indicate poor roof ventilation. Be on the lookout for curling, cupping, cracking, or blistering shingles. If your roof has asphalt shingles, you may find a gritty buildup in your gutter or near the downspout exits. The decking my show signs of movement or warping, looking like a wavy effect, sagging, or uneven rooflines.

Interior Red Flags

Keep an eye on your interior temperatures. Excessive heat in your attic leads to an oven effect. Poorly ventilated attics can be 150°F or hotter, especially during the summer months. The ideal temperature for an attic would only vary 10 to 15 degrees from what the outdoor temperature is.

Mold or musty odors are also attributed to poor ventilation. Without proper ventilation, humidity can become trapped in your attic. This creates condensation on your insulation and rafters, which leads to mold growth. That same condensation can cause metal to rust. You’ll begin finding corrosion on the duct straps, nails, and flashing.

Secondary Effects and Next Steps

Rising energy bills can also be due to poor roof ventilation. That heat trapped in your attic radiates into your living spaces. This causes your HVAC system to work harder and for longer cycles. Your HVAC system will compensate for the additional heat. As a result, you’ll use more energy.

Pest infestations may not seem like they have anything to do with your roof, but this is another result of improper ventilation. Once the wood and roofing materials become damaged by heat and moisture, they turn into the perfect nesting area for rodents, insects, and birds.

Keep an eye out for peeling paint, both inside and out. Trapped humid air affects your exterior paint near the roofline. It also affects your interior paint on your ceilings. The paint will begin to bubble and flake.

If you know you have good roof ventilation but you still see red flags, the vents may be blocked. Go into your attic and look for daylight along the soffits and ridge. If you can’t see sunlight, your vents are blocked.

Correcting these issues now prevents damage and contributes to the longevity of your roof. If you notice any of these red flags, seek help from a professional roofing company. Call Kairos Roofing in Fort Lauderdale, FL today to learn how you can achieve good roof ventilation for your home.
